Lilly’s Bulldawg Blog

February 4th, 2018

February 7th is national signing day, NSD, as used by the masses, for high school seniors around the county. It is the day when young adults make a four or three, year commitment to play a sport for the college of their choice. Yes, they are for sure getting a free education which is priceless, but I am all about kids committing to the G of Georgia! Now, I am not just excited about the football team. I am excited about any team that wears a jersey that has a beautiful G on it. NSD is always a fun day for the most loyal of fans and the most rabid Dawgs.

Fans wait to hear news about the newest Bulldawg!

Every year hundreds of UGA football fans gather in the gallery of the Butts-Mehre building for the big day. Young and old, male and female, and the just play crazy fans await announcements for young athletes. In the old days, a fax machine would be positioned at the front of the crowd. When the fax started making noise, it meant a letter of intent had been signed and was being faxed to the UGA coach. The coach would rip the fax from the machine and read the name to loud applause. The Dawg Nation had it’s the newest Dawg ready to come to town! Grown men and woman will take a day off from work just to be around other loyal fans.

One of my all-time favorites Todd Gurley at his announcement ceremony in 2012.

These young men have already committed to the G!

This year UGA landed the crown jewel from the class of 2018. His name is Justin Fields from Harrison High School in Cobb County. He is a Quarterback that can carry a team with his passing and running ability. He announced his decision on the high school campus. Like a real team player, he had his entire team around him when he chose his college. The event was close to the public, so there were no reporters or tv crews there to cover the show. However, a local news station had a helicopter flying over the event. Justin came out in his green high school jersey. He then pulled it over his head to reveal a red UGA jersey! I must admit I spent 30 min on the internet either trying to see this or actually watching it all happen from the helicopter camera.

Justin Fields is a Dawg! Man, was I happy!

At this point, UGA has the number one rated recruiting class in the nation. On NSD the rich might even get richer with more talented athletes committing to the G. I will throw in how I hope all these young people will make a wise decision. I will also give the perfunctory I hope they all get an excellent education. Yeah, I know all of that. But, I want to win championships, and I want to gloat to all my non-UGA fans about my teams. Please!! Go Dawgs.
