Week of March 27, 2017: Charleston Adventure Guide

March 27th, 2017

Adventures, well, vacations that include outstanding culinary experiences are my favorite – I live to eat. And, as most of you know, Charleston offers much more than just restaurants; it is an exceptional culinary city.

We planned our stay around five exceptional restaurants. Our first evening was spent at Circa 1886. The restaurant resides behind Wentworth Mansion, a beautiful restored mansion now serving as a fine hotel. The path leading to the restaurant consists of a pathway surrounded by a manicured garden. The setting preceded the experience.

Pattie my friend and wife is a vegan – she eats to live. And takes exception when I order cute, cartoon like, adorable animals for carnivore consumption. So, ordering rabbit stew, for example, simply spoils the evening; for her and invariable, me. There was one item on the Circa 1886 menu I was going to order – antelope. I needed to think quick, design a plan and execute it with perfection if I was going to eat the little antelope and not upset Pattie. Fortuitous instances do happen. Pattie went to the restroom, the waiter stopped by and I said, “I’m going to order the Osso Bucco and you’re going to bring me the antelope, understood?”. The little critter was delicious, even as Pattie asked how the Osso Bucco was. The evening ended delightfully although I did feel a little guilty at the fib, but it was told for the good of the order….

If you are a man and appreciate haberdashery and if you are a lady and appreciate quality couture, give yourselves a treat. Stop and visit Ben Silvers on King Street. If you can’t get there anytime soon, get the catalog. Do not look at the prices it will spoil the experience. If nothing else, you might appreciate the sense of commitment to excellence that this family has devoted to quality traditional clothing.

We used Airbnb to make our reservations and ended up just on the outskirts of the historic district where it was quiet. We rented a beautiful carriage house. The only downside turned out to be the distance from the historical district in the September heat. Uber to the rescue. We had never used the service, but it was raining and calling a taxi service left us a little disappointed. I downloaded the application and in a jiff and if as by magic a car was on the way. The anticipated arrival time was displayed and the driver’s car showed on a little map relative to our location. Freakonomics’ Steve Levitt, based his research of an actual demand/supply curve (until now it was just a theory) on their service: first of its kind in economics. And first of a kind in transportation. Uber uses the demand/supply curve to price their rides in real time.

Charleston, round the bend:
